Candidates for Dental Implant Surgery

Here at Joe Radakovich DMD in Portland, we understand how difficult it can be to have to deal with tooth loss. Our best advice for dealing with tooth loss is to have a tooth replacement plan. No matter what you use to replace your teeth with, it's better than leaving the spot in your mouth empty. Patients who want to replace their teeth with something comparable to their natural teeth find the most value in dental implants, which are surgically placed into their mouth and fully restore their ability to eat and speak as they did before tooth loss.

Dental implants are the best way to replace teeth today, and while we can place them in most of our patients, there are some qualifiers that make you an ideal dental implant candidate.

Am I an ideal dental implant candidate?

You are an ideal dental implant candidate if you match the following criteria:
•  You have great overall oral health.
•  You have robust bone structure in the jaw to support a dental implant.
•  You have healthy gum tissue that is free of periodontal disease.

What if I am not an ideal dental implant candidate?

No one fits all the criteria for being the ideal dental implant candidate, but we have standards for what that candidate looks like so that we can measure our patients against them. If you lack in one area or another, that's fine; we have ways to boost your oral health to turn you into the ideal candidate.

How do I become an ideal implant candidate?

Many times we will be able to make things work even if the conditions aren't perfect, but many times we will need to perform procedures before the dental implant placement surgery can take place. This will ensure the long-term success of the implants.

What are common pre-implant procedures?

Bone Grafts

A common issue that arises when a patient loses their teeth and doesn’t replace them for a period is the loss of bone in the jaw. Your teeth are constantly providing feedback to your jaw when you eat and talk via the roots. When you lose a tooth, the jaw also loses that constant feedback from the root of your tooth. Whenever any part of your body stops being used, it will begin to atrophy, the bone in your jaw is no different. Bone mass in your jaw will start to diminish slowly, over time and will ramp up as more teeth are lost and not replaced. If you have been without teeth or a tooth replacement for quite some time, there is a chance that we will have to perform a bone graft on your to bring your healthy bone levels to a point where it will be able to support a dental implant.

Soft Tissue Grafts

Some patients who wish to have dental implants have some issues with their gum tissue. Healthy gum tissue, like healthy bone tissue, is critical to the success of the dental implants. If you don’t have healthy gum tissue, there can be some serious aesthetic issues with your dental implant placement procedure. We can perform a soft tissue graft to bring healthy tissue from elsewhere in your mouth, or body, and place it in areas where your gum health is lacking.
