Single Tooth Dental Implants
Portland, OR

Having a loose tooth can be terrifying. Nobody ever wants to sustain tooth loss, as the lasting complications from missing teeth can be both embarrassing and painful. When you lose a tooth, it seems almost inevitable that the rest of your teeth will be damaged in the process. The fact is, losing a tooth can not only negatively impact your appearance, but it can also lead to further tooth loss. We here at Joe Radakovich DMD strongly recommend that if you lose a tooth, you replace it immediately with a dental implant to help keep your smile healthy and your remaining teeth strong.

What are the Dangers of Tooth Loss?

Did you know that by the time most of us turn 50, we will have lost an average of 12 teeth? Considering that we have only 32 permanent teeth in our mouth, that is quite a significant number of teeth to lose! Losing your tooth is not only going to make you feel shy and embarrassed about an unattractive gap between your teeth, but it can also cause further problems later on down the road.

When you lose a tooth, your remaining teeth become endangered, too.
•  Your bite force will be compromised, and your ability to eat and chew may become reduced. This means that your quality of life will start to suffer.
•  Your teeth may also start to wear down faster, as they are picking up extra work from your missing tooth.
•  They will also try to shift and migrate into the spot that was vacated, leading to a loose tooth and even more tooth loss.
•  To add insult to injury, you may also start to suffer from bone loss in your jaw.

You can prevent these problems from happening when you get a dental implant. Dental implants are a permanent and natural-looking solution to tooth loss. Getting a dental implant does require mild surgery, as we will need to cut into your gum tissue and place a titanium post directly into your jawbone. Once it heals and properly fuses to the bone (in a process that is called “osseointegration”), we will be able to attach a crown (also known as a “restoration”) to your post, giving you a permanent tooth that will last you the rest of your life if you take proper care of it.

Options If You Do Not Want a Dental Implant

Some people who may wish to avoid surgery may not want to get a dental implant. For them, they may consider a bridge or a partial denture. Bridges are crowns that are attached to your surrounding teeth for support, giving you a fake tooth where your missing tooth once was. Partial dentures can be removed, unlike implants and bridges. Neither of them can prevent bone loss and are not permanent, and they will eventually need to be replaced. While the initial cost of a partial or a bridge may seem cheaper at first, over time, the cost of replacing it will add up. Because of these issues, an implant is greatly superior in many ways.

If you have suffered from tooth loss, you deserve to have a fully functional and attractive smile once again. To learn more about dental implants, or to schedule an appointment at our office, please give us a call today here at Joe Radakovich DMD at (503) 455-4673!
