Answers to FAQs:

What are dental implants?

Dental implant - Oral Surgeon, Portland, OR
Dental implants are a permanent option for replacing missing teeth. Using a biocompatible titanium screw, we create a strong root attached to the jaw bone, giving you the look, feel and strength of your natural tooth. This option allows a missing tooth to be replaced without altering or trimming down neighboring teeth that would serve as anchors for a bridge, or without relying on neighboring teeth that are not strong enough to support a bridge. Once dental implants are placed, the gradual deterioration that takes place in your jawbone where teeth are missing is slowed or eliminated.

How do dental implants work?

Dental Implants work by surgically implanting a biocompatible titanium fixture that after 3-6 months will heal, therby be solid and strong, through a process called osseointegration. The implants are then uncovered and Dr. Radakovich attaches a crown to the implant.

Dr. Radakovich is happy to discuss Dental Implants with you and determine whether you are a suitable candidate. We offer many different procedures, including a full arch restoration, which is designed to provide dental implants for those missing an entire arch of teeth, but have too little bone mass to support a traditional implant supported denture.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

Candidates include a couple of factors. Most importantly, our patients need to be of reasonable health. We can discuss your health issues further during your appointment. Additionally, you must have enough bone structure to provide adequate anchorage for the implants. Possibility of a bone graft is an option. Most patients are potential candidates for dental implants.

What is the success rate of dental implants?

The success rate of implants depends on factors including where the implant is placed and how well the patients home routine of cleaning and care is. Most studies show success rates of at least 90%.

Why are dental implants so popular?

Implants are popular because they offer permanent strong tooth replacements attached to the jaw giving patients many advantages over conventional methods. They are both functional and aesthetic. If you want to replace missing teeth, discuss dental implants with Dr. Radakovich at our Portland, OR office.

Does it hurt to have dental implants placed?

Dental Implants is a surgical procedure. Most patients do experience minimal discomfort following dental implant placement. Though, it has been described as less painful in the days following than having a tooth extracted. We perform the procedure either under local anesthetic or with intravenous sedation.

While the implants are bonding to my jawbone, do I have to go without my teeth?

In most instances, temporary teeth can be worn during the healing period. On occasion, it will be recommended that a patient go without any temporary teeth for a short period of time. Ask us for more information.
